How to Use the Sinhala Keyboard

Getting Started

1. Click on the text area or start typing to begin entering Sinhala text
2. Type using your physical keyboard - letters are automatically converted to Sinhala script
3. Use simple transliteration: 'k' becomes ක, 'kh' becomes ඛ, 'g' becomes ග
4. For dependent vowel signs (pilla), use uppercase: 'AA' for ා, 'I' for ි, 'U' for ු. For independent vowels: 'a' for අ, 'aa' for ආ, 'i' for ඉ
5. Click Copy to copy your Sinhala text to clipboard, or Download to save as a file

Typing Methods

Method 1: Basic Consonants

Type single letters for basic consonants: 'k' for ක, 'g' for ග, 'c' for ච, 'j' for ජ, 't' for ට, 'd' for ඩ, 'p' for ප, 'b' for බ, 'm' for ම, 'n' for ණ, 'r' for ර, 'l' for ල, 's' for ස, 'h' for හ, 'v' for ව, 'y' for ය.

Method 2: Aspirated Consonants

Add 'h' after a consonant for aspirated sounds: 'kh' for ඛ, 'gh' for ඝ, 'ch' for ඡ, 'jh' for ඣ, 'th' for ඨ, 'dh' for ඪ, 'ph' for ඵ, 'bh' for භ.

Method 3: Case-Sensitive Mappings

Use uppercase for dental consonants: lowercase 't' for retroflex ට, uppercase 'T' for dental ත. Similarly, 'd/D' for ඩ/ද, 'th/Th' for ඨ/ථ, 'dh/Dh' for ඪ/ධ, 'n/N' for ණ/න.

Method 4: Vowels and Vowel Signs

Independent vowels (standalone): 'a' for අ, 'aa' for ආ, 'ae' for ඇ, 'i' for ඉ, 'ii' for ඊ, 'u' for උ, 'uu' for ඌ, 'e' for එ, 'ee' for ඒ, 'o' for ඔ, 'oo' for ඕ. Dependent vowel signs (pilla) after consonants: 'AA' for ා, 'I' for ි, 'II' for ී, 'U' for ු, 'UU' for ූ, 'E' for ෙ, 'EE' for ේ, 'O' for ො, 'OO' for ෝ.
